1989 Julia Dylan runs a successful security consultancy. When an eccentric academic disappears trying to find Spanish gold she is hired to find him.

Her husband Thomas, stuck in MI6 writing reports nobody reads, is suddenly sent to Turkey to find a consignment of hijacked Russian missiles.

To their surprise both Julia and Thomas find their paths leading to Madeira. That can’t be a coincidence. Somebody is pulling their strings. But who? And why?

Does the answer lie with a distinguished local family of wine merchants? Or with a former MI6 officer now working for the Americans in Panama? Or perhaps even with a retired Russian spy living peacefully on the island?

That peace cannot last. The cold war may be ending but its consequences are still explosive.
